Many games developed by Vanillaware have received mostly positive reviews from fans and critics alike. The classic games above PlayStation 2 like GrimGrimoire nice Odin Sphere are all highly appreciated and some of the developer’s other products such as Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Dragon’s Crown and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim also receive similar treatment. Vanillaware’s achievements have made many fans have high expectations for the Japanese developer’s next game and Unicorn Overlord has truly met that.

According to OpenCritic, Unicorn Overlord currently has a rating of 88/100. Critics have praised the game for its outstanding graphic style and tactical combat elements. However, some people criticized that the game’s plot was not attractive enough and did not meet the standards set by previous products. Unicorn Overlord’s score puts it among the highest-rated newly released games of 2024.

So what caused Vanillaware to take 10 years to introduce Unicorn Overlord? This game was born from the desire to recreate the classic strategy and tactical role-playing games of the 1990s on PlayStation and Sega Saturn. However, it’s important for developers to bring their own flair to the genre while still offering something new that’s both familiar and exciting.

The first impression Unicorn Overlord leaves on most people is its impressive visuals, which is a common feature of all games made by Vanillaware. Creating all the hand-drawn assets as well as the difficulty of constantly rebalancing the different unit types in the game took a lot of time. Tweaks to various unit types to provide a more even difficulty balance were made to prevent situations where some classes became too “game-breaking”. Therefore, the developer needs more time to redesign the interface and animation of the units.
