The Stray cat simulation game was adapted into an animated film

Stray turns players into an orange cat and takes them to an underground city filled with bacteria, machines, and robots. With the help of his companion, a drone, the cat needs to try to avoid the pursuit of Zurk bugs and Sentinels.

Annapurna Animation is led by Robert Baird and Andrew Millstein, both former Disney Animation executives. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mr. Baird compared this game to a comedy about the friendship between a cat and a robot.

Mr. Baird commented: “The film will have humorous elements and no human figures (like in the game). I think that’s one of the reasons this game is so popular is because you’re seeing the world through the eyes of an adorable cat. So how can we do that in the film? We will do it, although at times it feels impossible, we know it is the nature of the game and key to telling the story.

Stray also has “something very touching” and the creators are trying to capture this when transform game into movie. Mr. Millstein further shared that Stray is the game that the animation company chose to adapt first partly because it attracts many players.

Stray is released in 2022 on PC and PlayStation. The game is nominated for six awards at The Game Awards 2022, including Game of the Year and Best Game Direction. Stray won Best Indie Game and Best Indie Debut, and received nominations for three DICE awards and several BAFTA awards.
