In 2020, Demon Slayer reached the top manga The best-selling film in Japan, the theatrical film was also a resounding success as it continuously broke revenue records. As NHK reported, Yuki Saito, 52 years old, president of the Red Spice wholesale chain, was arrested along with her husband and two other accomplices. At the company’s warehouse in Aichi province, police confiscated 37,000 counterfeit products originating from China. However, all four suspects denied any wrongdoing.

It is known that most of the items are designed in the style of Demon Slayer, from clothes, wallets, scarves, backpacks, pillows,… of course, none of the products are officially licensed. What’s more funny, the manufacturers of these items also deliberately mixed up the title “Kimetsu no Yaiba” into similar phrases to easily fool unobservant consumers, for example “Kimetsu” was replaced with ” Kanji metsu” (meaning “destroy”). According to Japanese authorities, even if the name “Kimetsu no Yaiba” is not printed on the products, such plagiarism is enough to constitute a crime.
