Besides manga/anime that have ended or only lasted for a short time, there are famous brands that have gone a long way with fans. While the characters never age, the illustrators become more and more mature in age and their drawings, from which the characters also indirectly “change” their appearance over the years.
Because it’s been around for a long time, if we don’t repeat it, many readers may have forgotten these early appearances of familiar characters. To see the difference, let’s compare Gamehub with the series of images below.
Neko Musume.
The most surprising change is probably the name of the main character in the Neko Musume series by author GeGeGe no Kitaro. Even though they are the same character, between the original 1968 version and the latest version in 2018, we see that the cat girl has “successfully gone through puberty” and has a spectacular transformation, much more beautiful than before.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni’s rural schoolgirl Ryuga Rena became sharper in 2013, before being drawn in a streamlined style again in 2021.
Persona (One Piece) has more human-like eyes and expressions compared to the 2012 version.

Songoku (Dragon Ball) changes according to the character’s age manga.
Inorganic characters are no exception to this phenomenon. The RX-78 Gundam looks more modern and “vjp pro” than the 1979 version.
Shizuka (Doraemon) between the 1973 version and in the 2018 movie Nobita’s Treasure Island.
Tohru (Fruits Basket) versions 2001 (left) and 2021 (right).
Yuki Mori (Space Battleship Yamato) 1974 and 2017 versions.
Even Pikachu has changed a lot, but is still very adorable.
However, there are still a few characters that seem to remain the same after versions such as the original Sailor Moon (left) and in the movie Crystal (2021).
Saber (Fate/ Stay Night)’s charisma remains the same between the 2005 and 2015 versions.
