Having made a fortune, Demon Slayer studio is still accused of tax evasion as usual

Kotaku.com reported that Tokyo prosecutors recently charged the animation studio Ufotable and founder and CEO Hikaru Kondo sin not paying taxes about 1.2 million USD. NHK and ANN News reported that from 2015 to 2018, the studio as well as Mr. Kondo hid about $4 million in company income. According to unofficial sources, this CEO secretly hid cash at home in a personal safe.

Last year, Ufotable as well as CEO Kondo received many accusations of suspected violation of Japanese corporate and consumption tax laws. These allegations claim that the studio failed to fully report the income sources and sales revenue the company had from its anime business and coffee chain. At that time, through Jiji Press news agency, Ufotable issued an apology to the public: “We are committed to complying with the law and will conduct appropriate activities to create a creative environment for more sustainable and healthier products”.

Ufotable’s anime cafes are allegedly used for shady operations.

And yet, according to another report by Bunshun Digital (via ANN), since 2019, Ufotable has taken action to misappropriate charity funds – this is an illegal act that can result in a sentence of 10 years in prison. However, despite many upheavals and tax-related scandals, 51-year-old Hikaru Kondo is still the president and CEO of Ufotable.

In 2000, Hikaru Kondo founded Ufotable and quickly brought the studio’s name to new heights with a number of notable anime films, including Fate/stay night, Tales, … and especially must mention to the anime adaptation Demon Slayer Extremely successful in 2020.
