Last July, PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds) has quietly changed its name to PUBG: Battlegrounds or more fully, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds: Battlegrounds. It sounds quite lengthy and unnecessary, but there is clearly a reasonable plan behind this name change of Krafton.
In an interview with PC Gamer, publisher Krafton shared:
The latest game in this series, PUBG: New State, is a mobile game set in the future of 2051, many years after the events of PUBG: Battlegrounds. Without government control, factions constantly confront and fight each other, leaving the world in chaos with no way out… The game is expected to be released later this year.
Upcoming PUBG: Battlegrounds will be released for free within 1 week to mark the game’s collaboration with the famous K-Pop girl group BlackPink. Players can download the game for free from August 10 to August 16. This is also a good opportunity for Krafton to evaluate player reactions before turning PUBG: Battlegrounds into a completely free game like rivals Fortnite, Apex Legends or Call of Duty: Warzone.
